I do sort of feel bad for city planners. Many I believe would like to create a better environment for all road users, but if you don't have a mayor, councillors or the public on board, you'll have a hard sell.

When the road I live on was being redone, I went to the presentation to have an idea what it would look like.
I noticed no bike lanes in the plan and pointed it out. The planner was thrilled with the idea and seemed to genuinely forget to add them...Happy to say when the road was complete, bike lanes (all be it painted lines) were added!

A lesson for all: if you don't ask, you won't get.
And yes, it's public officials you need to persuade. So take the time to show up at a meeting and write a letter to the editor. Let it do double-duty -- send the same letter to your elected officials.
