For winter cycling, Bill, I'd recommend trying BMX pedals next season. The nice large platform ensures good contact when you can't feel your winter boot placement on the pedal very well, and the protruding studs ensure no slippage in the wettest, iciest, slushiest conditions. I put BMX pedals on my beater bike a couple of years ago now and simply left them there for the summer too.

You can take my cleats when you pry my cold, dead feet off the pedals :)

Of course, I ride a recumbent bicycle, so the cleats mean that I don't have to work just to hold my feet up against the pedals. Getting clipless pedals made is SO MUCH easier to ride my bike that I'll just never go back.
